Capetown, South Africa - April 2010

Capetown, South Africa - from the harbor with a view of table mountain

hiking up Table Mountain

bicycle wine tour. South Africa's Stellenbosch wine region dates back to 1659

some of the best wine I've ever had! I don't think South Africans make a bad wine

not a difficult bike ride, but not the easiest either.

South Africans cool off with brandy and chilled apricot juice. (and I have to get back on a bike after this?!)

The next day we went on Safari!

every zebra has unique markings like a fingerprint

You're fine as long as the Rhino isn't looking at you. They can't see well, so they rely on sound and smell... if you get they're attention, they're going to charge you!

This was the moment that our guide freaked out a little. We had to sit still (and hold our breath) until he went back to eating.

Elephants slather mud on themselves to keep cool.

Ostriches travel in a harem with many females and only one male.

The black one is the male.

Hippos are best seen from a distance. Apparently more people die from Hippo attacks than any other animal in Africa. Huh. They look so cute!

Cheetahs are endangered because they make really good pets... until they eat their other pet Spot. And then they want to get rid of them.

The "Table Cloth" - Every morning a cloud forms over Table Mountain, from water that evaporates from within in the hot African sun and every night it disappears.

Another view of Table Mountain and the "Table Cloth" from the Harbor.

It is local tradition to hike up the Lion's Head mountain to watch the sunset.

It was VERY steep in places. Chains are in place to help keep you from falling. Cold comfort!

A few hours, but we made it to the top!

and it was worth it!

WHAT A VIEW!

The view of the coastline was breathtaking from Lion's Head!

(the downside of hiking to the top of a mountain at sunset is hiking BACK DOWN in the pitch black darkness! It was treacherous, and we didn't think to bring a flashlight. Thank god I had an iPhone and there's an app for that!)
